Mary Ann Shafer, MD

Adolescent medicine specialist

Dr. Mary Ann Shafer is a nationally recognized specialist in adolescent medicine with particular expertise in eating disorders, fatigue and pain syndromes, gynecology and complex chronic illnesses. In addition to caring for patients, she is associate director for training in the UCSF Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine.

Focuses of Shafer's research include the diagnosis of chlamydial infections and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in teens, translating preventive health guidelines into everyday practice, and developing skills-building interventions to prevent STDs and HIV infection in adolescents and young adults.

Shafer received her medical degree from Yale University. She completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in adolescent medicine at UCSF.
